Transition Year

Transition Year serves to bridge the gap between Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate, which can prove to be a difficult leap for some students. It offers time and space for the young boy to mature sufficiently so that the very adult experience that constitutes the Leaving Cert programme can be faced with greater confidence. Activities during this year are geared towards broadening the student's outlook, and instilling a more mature attitude towards himself and his environment. Within each subject, a certain amount of work is done on Leaving Certificate syllabi . Other material is also be presented which may or may not be directly related to the syllabus, but which is designed to foster an interest in the broader ranges of the subject.
Work experience is a very important component of the Transition Year. Every student is encouraged to find a temporary placement in a job that he feels might eventually become a career for him.
The following is a list of some of the activities and events that took place during the last school year for the Transition Year students:
Trip to Delphi outdoor pursuits centre in Galway;
4 week taster course in Tralee Institute of Technology, which encompassed science, engineering, business and computers.

G.A.A. coaching course
Raising money for the Cope Foundation and Macroom Charities Appeal
Invited guests included speakers from Women Against Violence, the Cope Foundation, Asylum Seekers, St. Vincent de Paul, and the F.C.A.
A film production team spent a day with the students, taking them through the process involved in making a film.
Provisionally, activities for this year include:
Swimming lessons; First Aid course; GAA coaching course; Guitar lessons; Driving licence theory test course.
